I might just be a little late in watching the show; okay late by a few years perhaps. I always thought Game of Thrones was overrated. Can you blame me? It was everywhere; it was all people would talk about, back then. For a moment, I thought I was among the only few people who do not watch the show. And it is somewhat true. And I tried to watch it, back then, believe me. I watched a few episodes of the first season. But I just couldn’t go on. The incest, the nudity: it was a little too much for me. I still remember Jubi’s voice defending the show: but the show is so much more, it is so political! At the time, I could not see past the show’s incest and nudity, but little did I know how wrong I was.
I do not know what convinced me to watch Game of Thrones this time after years: perhaps it was the way he described it, perhaps it was my brother giving me my own TV screen and full seasons of GOT being casually available on his hard drive. Yeah, it is definitely the latter. This time, I saw Game of Thrones in a different light. And I realized Laalee was right all those years ago: once you see past the incest and the nudity (it is based on medieval times, anyway), the show offers so much more. It is intriguing, it is political, it is emotional and it is enthralling. It is fascinating to see the characters manipulate the other.
Although my brother has asked me numerous times, I do not really have a favorite character in the series although I do have the least liked; two actually. Geoffrey Lannister and Ramsay Bolton, without a doubt. I used to see tons of memes and posts regarding GOT. And now, I am not ashamed to say that I finally get them. I finally get the meaning of Hodor and his popular memes back then, or why people made memes about Martin killing off characters that people had just begun to like. And of course, needless to say, I was disappointed at the end of the series especially because of the buildup the made with the white walkers from season 1, but all that build up was finished off in one mere episode. Not to mention all that buildup they made with Daenerys Targaryen; she rose from nothing, we see this great story of her and yet it was ended abruptly. Again, I might be a little too late for fussing over this, but I expected more from the big secret that Jon Snow was actually the secret son of RhaeSgar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark.
I have to say, the most gripping parts of the series would have to be the battle scenes. It is so well shot and worth appreciating. Laalee always said that this is one of the most epic television series of all times and now I can see why, even though it’s many years later. Hey; better late than never, right? But I haven’t read the book, either. Perhaps I should get started on that now.
