Best Places for Breakfast in Kathmandu

The only reason I love sleep, more than the reason that, well, it’s sleep, is that it’s like time travelling to breakfast.
Yeah, no kidding.
Breakfast, the most important meal of the day. Whoever named that meal breakfast, was straightforward. I don’t know who named lunch and dinner, but the breakfast guy? He cut in straight to the point, didn’t he? Because breakfast is literally breaking your 8-10 hours fast.
Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dinner like a pauper, they say. So, you don’t really want to compromise on breakfast now, do you?
Now, this is no backlashing, but in many restaurants around town, the most breakfast things they have on the menu are omelet and toast. Yeah, I was disappointed too.
There’s this restaurant in Mangal Bazar, where my best friend and I met up early morning. We decided to have breakfast. The restaurant overlooks the courtyard so it’s a beautiful place to talk over a cup of coffee or tea. She and I ordered a cheese omelet each. Have you ever imagined how oozy the cheese omelet should be when you cut in and slice off a piece? This was clearly not one of those moments. There were literal pieces of graded cheese on the top, not melted, I might add. In a place swarmed with tourists, you don’t think this would happen. Needless to say, she and I have not been there since.
Now that has been disclosed, let’s go for the best mentions, in no particular order:
Hot tea and jerry swari at Mangal Bazar in the early hours: Have breakfast the Nepali way with hot tea and jerry swari at Mangal Bazar. The morning vibes, the warm sunlight on your face, a delicious treat in your hands, could you ask for more?
I would!
I would ask for more jerry swari.

Gwarmari at Basantapur: Another breakfast treat is Gwarmari; these are perfect for you if you are the more savory kind than the sweet. I swear, you could just gobble down 4 or 5 with hot tea in the morning and you wouldn’t even notice how many have gone by.

Khapse, tingma and Sherpa tea at Bouddha: Have you tried Khapse with tea? If you haven’t you’ve definitely missed out. It’s delicious! Sherpa tea is a little different than milk tea given that it has a salty buttery taste. The combination of the two is heavenly. Take a packet of khapse, easily available around Bouddha, a cup of Sherpa tea and break apart a tingma, they’re soft and yum. Do this while you watch the world go by at Boudhhanath Stupa and you already have an amazing start to the day.

Himalayan Java: Besides the fact that they offer this wide array of breakfast choices, they are available in many parts of town. They have sandwiches that you fill you up and enough for two, English breakfast, waffles, French toast, eggs benedict, oatmeal, and more. Their chocolate pancakes are to die for.

And recently they have also added bagels to the menu. You can choose the bagel bun and the fillings. Go nuts!

Their breakfast is served all day until 3 pm so no one is judging a night owl.

Café Soma: Café Soma is very popular for breakfast and there’s a reason for that. Well, the reason is breakfast.

They offer a wide range of choices like pancakes, waffles, English breakfast, French toast, eggs benedict, oatmeal and more.

Try the eggs benedict here, it’s yum!
Café Gaia: Set in Thamel, this place not only serves good breakfast but is one of the coziest places to share breakfast with someone. Although, set in one of the busiest streets of Kathmandu, strangely this place is relaxing to be at.

Mike’s Breakfast: Mike’s Breakfast were the first to introduce a proper place for Western style breakfast in Nepal and their breakfast range is heavenly, Recently, they have moved from Baluwatar to Lazimpat.

Herman Helmer’s Bakery: When you’re in a hurry to eat, want to eat breakfast on the go or just want to stock up on breakfast goodies, visit the Herman Helmer’s Bakery at Jhamiskhel. They have cookies, sandwiches, burgers, rolls, patties, just the more reason to get you out of bed early in the morning. A few years ago, they have also made coffee and drinks an addition so, whichever suits your mood.

The French Bakery: The French Bakery became popular when it showed up on MNS Hunger Hunt for its staggering sandwich. Just as the name, the sandwich is equally unique and huge. It’s fit for two unless you have a big ass appetite. Nonetheless, the French Bakery is an excellent choice for breakfast. Try the staggering sandwich or their other varieties.

Rajamati

I think we’ve all heard the song of Rajamati growing up. It is so popular that many people in Nepal claim this is the only Newari song that they have heard. The song was written some 200 years back. The first few lines go like this, which I’m sure you must have heard of, unless you’ve been living under a rock: Rājamati kumati, jike wasā pirati Hāya bābā Rājamati-chā Rājamati mabila dhāsā Kāshi wane tela bubā Hayā biu Rājamati-chā. San dhāsā kuli kuli, mikhā dhāsā bālā bālā Sakumi yā mhyāy machā lā Khwā dhāsā tuyu khwā, khwālay niga tee du Tāhā Nani yā Rājamati-chā. It is said to be written by or rather from the perspective of a man who was infatuated and in awe of the beauty of Rajamati. He describes with great admiration: her hair, her eyes, her complexion and the little moles on her face. However it is unknown who the writer of this beautiful song is. The song rushed into popularity after it was played in England in 1850 when Prime Minister Jung Bahadur Rana vi

The Leaving vs The Left Behind

I still remember,  I was standing near the entrance looking out at the garden. I was at my best friend’s home and she had gone to get her ever famous chips chilly for me. I was to leave for Bangalore again, in a couple of days. While I waited, I looked out at the garden and this thought came into my head. “Who is it harder for? The one leaving or the ones left behind?” Is it going to be harder for me in a new place readjusting and exploring, or my best friend here, who will me miss me? Is it harder for a person to settle in a completely new place with a completely new lifestyle and have to find new people or for a person to see the same old places, the same old alleys and reminiscent the good times they had with their friend who are not around at the moment? It was a random thought that filled my mind a couple of minutes and then I got over it. Some time after resettling here in Bangalore, my best friend sent me a reel. The reel was about 2 close friends who used to lived minutes a

Coming back home after one year has been a rollercoaster of emotions for me the past month. Getting to see everyone again, embracing family and friends, working on an office desk again, walking through same old alleys and of course, devouring delicious food that I so dearly missed. I am actually almost through the food list that I have been saving. But the people have been asking me the same question a lot: do you like it here in Nepal or in Bangalore? And the answer has always been the same for me: I like it wherever I am. Kathmandu is home, it is warm, and it is where family is. Bangalore is a different vibe and freedom and excitement. Kathmandu is a different fun and Bangalore is different fun, which is why I live in the moment and enjoy where I am. My mother always tells me: “ La wani tha nya wani ma” in Nepal Bhasa meaning “ the fish must go where the water goes”. The meaning while very basic is also very deep. If the fish does not flow with the water, it cannot survive. If yo
