One Day in Palpa

“Choli ramro palpali Dhaka ko…” we’ve all heard this classic song. But here’s a catcher: while Palpa is famous for its Dhaka cloth and karuwas, these are not the only things you should visit Palpa for. Palpa is so much more, one of my favorite places that I’ve visited so far. Plan a weekend to Palpa. Enjoy the hill station vibes when you enter the city: I don’t know if it is just me, but I love small cities that are created around a small hill; houses as if they were placed on top of one another. We’re talking about Tansen, Palpa here. I swear the moment I saw the city I could not help but remember the hillstations like Darjeeling and cities like Kirtipur. The step by step uphill rounding to the city is itself a wonderful journey. Palpa ko Jerry: When I left for Palpa, my brother suggested I try the jerry there. He insisted that it was different from the jerries available here. I did not think much of it. But once I took a bite, there was no denying he was right. The jerry ...

How to Get Up Early in the Morning

They say there are two types of people when it comes to sleeping habits: night owls and early birds. Somehow I am a little bit of both. As a morning class student for almost 8 years now, I have a little bit of experience on how to get up at the crack of dawn. Here are some of the techniques you can use to get that lazy bottom out of bed early in the morning (earlier than anticipated of course).   And no, it does not include having someone dump a bucket of water over your head, but you can try that if you would like: I would not judge you at all. Be clear of your purpose:   “mann ko kura” as my mother always says, or “mann ko Shakti”. When we know we have to do something, it doesn’t seem as hard.   Perhaps our purpose makes it seem a tad bit easier. When you know you just have to take that shower to look good for that party, the cold water doesn’t seem as bad. When you know you have to eat that plate of momos to fulfill that craving, that extra half hour of wa...

The Art of Loving

We have all loved; maybe not been in love but loved nonetheless. And yes, before you even think about that question, these are two different contexts. I’m quite embarrassed to bring this up, but I remember during our orientation we were made to choose topics at random and we had to give a short speech on the spot. I got the topic “love”. I felt embarrassed and a little bit shy as soon as I saw what my topic was. I didn’t know what I would say about love in front of more than 2 dozen people. I related that love was not only limited to the love in relationships but to love in friendship, families and others. But I could not go beyond that and I really regret it. I wish I could have said more on the topic. Keeping that incident aside, here is why I am bringing up the topic of love again: it’s the month of love! And while it may seem like just another month to the singles, it is not. February has Valentine’s Day *wink *wink. I don’t know if it is just me but I don’t really ...

Tyranny of our Remembering selves

I was catching up over a cup of coffee with my elder brother when I happened to see the biggest dog I had seen yet in my life.   I quickly told my brother to get his phone out because mine happened to be dead. He looked at me calmly and said these exact words: “Why? Are you in tyranny of your remembering self?”   I gave him a blank look. Frankly, I was dumbfounded. I asked him to explain what he meant and that was how I got to know about the tyranny of remembering self. At first, it did not make sense to me at the time, per say, but the more I thought about it, the more it made sense. Tyranny of remembering self refers to the idea that to most people, the most wonderful experiences have little or no value if those experiences cannot be remembered. This is the reason we are so obliged, so caught up, so determined to take pictures of each and everything: desperate to catch hold of the moment. As pointed out by psychologist Daniel Kahneman in his book “Thi...
