Most Beautiful Time of the Day

I’ve always been more of an early bird rather than a night owl. There is just something majestic about the early hours of the morning, and it is not just that light is taking over the darkness of the night, although that is beside the point. There is a different energy in the early morning hours and anyone who is used to getting up early would agree with me.

It is just beyond words; the fresh air in the morning, fewer people out on the streets, people getting ready for their day, birds chirping and filling the atmosphere with music, the soft sunlight. It makes you feel like you can do anything in the world. Perhaps this is why Robin Sharma has emphasized the significance of the 5AM Club.

I had never quite found the perfect song to describe the beauty of the early morning hours. But this song from Rajamati movie describes it perfectly.

Here is the English translation to this Nepal Bhasa song so that you can awe at this beautiful song, too:

Slowly, slowly, it is becoming brighter

The darkness is being overtaken

Morning has come, little lady,

It is time to wake up now.

Slowly, slowly, it is becoming brighter

The darkness is being overtaken.

Between each brick on the roof, the sunlight is coming through

The chowk has opened its eyes due to the sunlight.

At each house, the front door is being swept clean

Can’t you hear the cling cling of the glass bangles

(Slowly, slowly, it is becoming brighter

The darkness is being overtaken

Morning has come, little lady,

It is time to wake up now.

Slowly, slowly, it is becoming brighter

The darkness is being overtaken)

The Old God of the East has been found

The main entrance of the Bahal is being purified with gobar of cow and giving light

Taking a bath in a river of gold

The Himalayas look so beautiful as if it has just woke up

(Slowly, slowly, it is becoming brighter

The darkness is being overtaken

Morning has come, little lady,

It is time to wake up now.

Slowly, slowly, it is becoming brighter

The darkness is being overtaken)

These lines take me back to one of my favorite early morning memories.

लुँया खुसि म्ह्वो ल्हुया पर्बतमाला

नकतिनि दना वथें गुलिजक बाँला

It was the year 2012. We were in Dhampus, Pokhara for a college trip. Having slept late into the night, all of us were deep in sleep. Astha , our friend woke up everyone and urged us to come look outside. We grudgingly lifted ourselves from the warmth of our beds and took a step out of our rooms with half closed eyes when we saw the most majestic view. The Himalayas look very very close from Dhampus and on that very morning as the golden sun rays hit the snowcapped mountains, it was like we had struck on a gold mine. Our half closed eyes flew open in awe. We were in heaven at that very moment.

Early morning is the most beautiful time of the day. There is not a doubt in my mind about that. And if this song doesn’t inspire you to get up early, I don’t know what will. Take a look at my How to Get Up Early in the Morning article to give it a try. My mother always says that you can get so much more done when you wake up early in the morning and it could not be more true. You feel more energized, more accomplished. You can exercise, you can clean up, you can go for a walk, you can just watch the sunrise and you still have plenty of time for the rest of the day. I’m telling you, there is something magical about the early hours of the morning.

Listen to the song for yourself.

Rajamati

I think we’ve all heard the song of Rajamati growing up. It is so popular that many people in Nepal claim this is the only Newari song that they have heard. The song was written some 200 years back. The first few lines go like this, which I’m sure you must have heard of, unless you’ve been living under a rock: Rājamati kumati, jike wasā pirati Hāya bābā Rājamati-chā Rājamati mabila dhāsā Kāshi wane tela bubā Hayā biu Rājamati-chā. San dhāsā kuli kuli, mikhā dhāsā bālā bālā Sakumi yā mhyāy machā lā Khwā dhāsā tuyu khwā, khwālay niga tee du Tāhā Nani yā Rājamati-chā. It is said to be written by or rather from the perspective of a man who was infatuated and in awe of the beauty of Rajamati. He describes with great admiration: her hair, her eyes, her complexion and the little moles on her face. However it is unknown who the writer of this beautiful song is. The song rushed into popularity after it was played in England in 1850 when Prime Minister Jung Bahadur Rana vi...

The Leaving vs The Left Behind

I still remember,  I was standing near the entrance looking out at the garden. I was at my best friend’s home and she had gone to get her ever famous chips chilly for me. I was to leave for Bangalore again, in a couple of days. While I waited, I looked out at the garden and this thought came into my head. “Who is it harder for? The one leaving or the ones left behind?” Is it going to be harder for me in a new place readjusting and exploring, or my best friend here, who will me miss me? Is it harder for a person to settle in a completely new place with a completely new lifestyle and have to find new people or for a person to see the same old places, the same old alleys and reminiscent the good times they had with their friend who are not around at the moment? It was a random thought that filled my mind a couple of minutes and then I got over it. Some time after resettling here in Bangalore, my best friend sent me a reel. The reel was about 2 close friends who used to lived ...

Most Asked Question

Coming back home after one year has been a rollercoaster of emotions for me the past month. Getting to see everyone again, embracing family and friends, working on an office desk again, walking through same old alleys and of course, devouring delicious food that I so dearly missed. I am actually almost through the food list that I have been saving. But the people have been asking me the same question a lot: do you like it here in Nepal or in Bangalore? And the answer has always been the same for me: I like it wherever I am. Kathmandu is home, it is warm, and it is where family is. Bangalore is a different vibe and freedom and excitement. Kathmandu is a different fun and Bangalore is different fun, which is why I live in the moment and enjoy where I am. My mother always tells me: “ La wani tha nya wani ma” in Nepal Bhasa meaning “ the fish must go where the water goes”. The meaning while very basic is also very deep. If the fish does not flow with the water, it cannot survive. I...
