3 AM Thoughts

So I woke up at 3 AM the other day and braced myself for dreadful thoughts. Horror movies like Conjuring and Insidious and many other movies have put this mindset on my head that 3 AM is an ungodly hour. The time when the devil is most powerful. And if you hadn’t already figured out reading this, I’m quite a horror movie buff. And such is the reason that the tiniest of things make me pull the blanket closer at this hour. Now, I’m someone who casually watches horror movies during the day with no one or someone around; mind you. But, I remember the scary scenes during the times when I wake up at night, especially during the 3 AM mark. And I read somewhere a couple of years ago that if you wake up during the 2-3 AM mark, it’s because someone or something is watching you sleep. Needless to say, that did not help me waking up during this hour at all. So I braced myself. Here come back all the horror movie images, I thought. I waited. But this time, there were no such thoughts. Th...

S’more Cookies in Town

P.C: Mediocre Baker/Suzal Gurung So I happened to accidentally find this page on Instagram. It popped up on my newsfeed with a cookie delight that I just couldn’t help but glance at. S’more cookies it read. Silky melty dark chocolate with toasted marshmallows on a delicious gooey cookie base. Now, having the sweet tooth that I do I notice that that this is new. We do not have s’more cookies here.   Needless to say, my curiosity got the best of me and I sent in a DM. I waited for my order. I could not wait to get a hold of those cookies. And when they did arrive, I was beside myself with joy. These huge cookies looked so inviting packed and tucked neatly. Every bite screamed delicious triumph as I got a hold of chocolate chunks and toasted marshmallows. Someone ...

Once Upon A Time in Kathmandu

Do you realize how much times have changed since we’ve all grown up? Oh it hits us sometimes, alright. Sometimes, something nostalgic will make you realize that and other times it will be in the most subtle of ways. Nevertheless, we are changing, times are changing and the city we live in is also changing.  Change is good, they say. This kind of change I’m diplomatic about. Of course, I was not there during older days of the valley. But I've heard lots of stories. I’m sure you must have heard them, too. Stories from our parents and stories from our grandparents. It seems like another world doesn’t it? The stories that start with once upon a time in Kathmandu. Once upon a time in Kathmandu, eggs were available at 1 paisa each. Hard to believe that when crates can go up to Rs 300 these days. But they were. 5 paisa would get you a tummy full of lunch. But times were simpler then and the value of money was also similar. Gold would go up to Rs 1000 per tola. People would be paid ...

Sorry

Sorry is perhaps the only word that is both overused and underused. I’ll tell you how. When you want to hear it; when you at least want the other person to own up to what they did and they don’t, it’s the most underused word. It becomes a burden on your mind. And then there comes the instance where even the most hurtful of comments or actions are passed off with a sorry as if a sorry could make everything alright again and pick up all those broken pieces. There in those moments, sorry is the most overused word so much that it loses its value. Recently, as my Youtube playlist played Taylor Swift’s “You’re not Sorry” on autoplay, I realized sometimes we can just tell if the other person is not genuinely sorry when they say it. As human beings, we are prone to making mistakes, more times often than we would like to. Some of these mistakes are unintentional, actually most are unintentional and we hurt people around us without realizing. But the question is how apologetic we are for o...
