Crème Brulee is one of those desserts that look very sophisticated but are actually pretty simple if done right. I always used to think that I could never make one because I don’t have a blow torch but I’m glad to be proved wrong. Make simple crème brulee at home this quarantine period.
You will need:
1 cup milk
1 tablespoon vanilla essence
1 egg yolk
2 cups sugar
1 teaspoon corn starch
The preparation time can go anywhere from 5 – 10 minutes but you will need a good couple of hours for the custard to chill in the refrigerator.
Instructions
For the custard:
- Start with pouring your milk in a pot over the stove on medium heat
- Pour in the ½ cup sugar or depending on your liking
- Pour in the vanilla essence
- Keep stirring the mixture
- Crack an egg and put the egg yolk in a bowl
- Put in the corn starch and whisk
- Now, pour in a little bit of the milk, sugar and vanilla essence mixture and whisk. Then, add the egg mixture back into the pot.
- Keep whisking; the batter will thicken on low heat.
- Let the custard simmer for a while.
- Sieve the custard into a bowl or cup of your liking.
- Let it cool at room temperature for 5 – 10 minutes then put in the refrigerator to chill.
- After 3 – 4 hours, take your custard out.
- Take a pan and about ½ cup sugar.
- Pour the sugar onto the pan over high heat and stir the sugar. Keep a close eye on it so you don’t burn it
- The sugar will look into this dark, gooeey mixture. This is what we want.
- Pour the melted sugar directly over your custard.
- Wait a few minutes until the sugar hardens.
- Crack open your crème brulee to dig in!
