A Weekend in Guangzhou

Here’s a not so surprising fact, Guangzhou, a single city in China, is big enough to get lost into for more than a week, wait even that would be an understatement, And while Guangzhou is popular as an industrial state and its huge market, you can always find fun things to do in Guangzhou.
If you are someone who like to try new tastes and new kind of foods, you’d have a great time here unless, well, you’re not someone who likes new exotic foods. And if you explore the grocery store here, you’d find that the meat section has been based in a different way; people hunt for the best looking chicken feet. Yeah, chicken feet, you heard that right; I was not amused either. Also, while you’re there try a new fruit Durian that is not available in Nepal, and then never try it again. Why? I’ll let you figure that out for yourself.
Food things aside, here are things you can do on a weekend in Guangzhou.
Go hiking around the Baiyun mountain park
It’s one of the best experiences you could get here. You’d think “Why should I go hiking in a place like China when I come from a country full of mountains?” yeah I feel you, but trust me, it’s a whole other experience, get the fresh air of Guangzhou, and embrace the view from the top.

Shawan Ancient Town
This town is like walking back in time. Take a look through what Guangzhou has to offer.
Chimelong paradise
You’d need a full day here, yeah you’d definitely need a whole day here; there are just soo many things to do.  Remember to go on the roller coaster, the rides are nothing like the fun park in Nepal. And by nothing, I mean so much more fun and more adventurous.
Beaches
A good beach will cost you some time and a train ride or two to get, but once you get there, it is definitely relaxing.
Liuhua Lake Park
The Liuhua Lake Park is exotic, enchanting and a loss of words to describe. It is so large, it is perfect to stroll around and talk with someone. The lake in the middle just adds more magic to the place. Definitely a must go to place.
Pizza hut
The pizza hut here tastes different than the one in Nepal. Go ahead try it.
Try different types of Lays
I think this was one of the things I was most excited about. There were so many interesting flavors: cucumber, yogurt. And Lays tastes lighter here and the chips look different too.
Canton Tower
The Canton Tower is one of the main attractions here at Guangzhou. Here’s a little tip, visit the tower park at night, that you get to see the beautiful lights that illuminate the tower and its surroundings. You are able to go up the tower, but it can be kind of expensive.
Guangzhou Library
If you’re a book enthusiast like me, you’ll lose yourself in this place. Situated near the Canton tower, the Guangzhou library building is beautiful, and has floors full of books. Yeah, sounds heavenly already, does it not?
Hello Kitty restaurant
Situated in a mall near Canton Tower, the Hello Kitty restaurant is a wonderland. We all remember hello kitty growing up. This restaurant celebrates Hello Kitty as if its life depends on it. The plates, the spoons, the napkins, everything is Hello Kitty. Needless to say, I was reluctant to leave.
Of course there are a lot more things to do, explore that if you have the time; explore the market, the new tastes, the streets and get lost in the wonderland that Guangzhou is, but not totally! Because you’ll find that majority of people here do not speak English.

Rajamati

I think we’ve all heard the song of Rajamati growing up. It is so popular that many people in Nepal claim this is the only Newari song that they have heard. The song was written some 200 years back. The first few lines go like this, which I’m sure you must have heard of, unless you’ve been living under a rock: Rājamati kumati, jike wasā pirati Hāya bābā Rājamati-chā Rājamati mabila dhāsā Kāshi wane tela bubā Hayā biu Rājamati-chā. San dhāsā kuli kuli, mikhā dhāsā bālā bālā Sakumi yā mhyāy machā lā Khwā dhāsā tuyu khwā, khwālay niga tee du Tāhā Nani yā Rājamati-chā. It is said to be written by or rather from the perspective of a man who was infatuated and in awe of the beauty of Rajamati. He describes with great admiration: her hair, her eyes, her complexion and the little moles on her face. However it is unknown who the writer of this beautiful song is. The song rushed into popularity after it was played in England in 1850 when Prime Minister Jung Bahadur Rana vi...

Everyday Phases by my Mother part 2

I have been meaning to write this part 2, especially after Every Day Phrases by my Mother , the first part was liked by so many and also because, well, the phrases and the dialogues never end with my mother. I did tease her about writing a book or making a scrapbook about all her phrases, but we never got around to it. So here we are, after almost 4 years, apologies if the Nepal bhasa wordings are incorrect somewhere Ne tha ne masau Bhwauthau pwa This is basically saying, not being able to take advantage of the situation or not doing what you are supposed to do at the event. If you get invited somewhere that has food, you should eat there. Neu twanyu tha yu yethe, jui chwanyu kata pinyu yethe I have heard this one many times. In the society that we live in, impression and your social image matters a lot, especially when it comes to family prestige. So it does not matter what you do at home but once you step outside, there is this social obligation of dressing appropriately, behav...

The Oldest Kumari

Dhana Kumari Bajracharya resides amidst the hustle and bustle in Gabahal, Patan. She is a 70 year old woman, who you would think is much younger at age, if you look at her. Age seems to have done justice to this beautiful woman. What makes this wise old woman different than other wise old women in Patan? She is the oldest Kumari of Patan. Kumari, the living goddess is a tradition or a practice that has been around for many years and that has been celebrated widely in the Kathmandu Valley. The very first Kumari goes back to 17 th Century. The process to choose the Kumari is divine and a girl must go through several tests to get chosen as the Kumari. Dhana Kumari Bajracharya is the longest serving Kumari of Patan having been established as the Kumari from 2010 B.S to 2042 B.S. A whooping 32 years. Perhaps her case is the most rare that we might come across. A girl serves as a Kumari until she reaches puberty, or she has her first menstruation. After that, it is believed that th...
